Abstract. The article revealed the legal status of employees of the clerks in the second half of XVI – the beginning of XVII c. on the basis of a study of codified texts (Code of Law) and legislative acts. It was found that the sphere of responsibilities clearly regulated between officials in the proceedings of writ. However, the general principle of estates in the division of responsibility contributed to the development of corruption and bribery among the clerks.
