Abstract. This paper is dedicated to pun as a linguistic phenomenon and a translation
problem. The linguistic basis of this phenomenon, its connection with the notion of ‘wordplay’,
possibility or impossibility to translate English puns into Russian, and two strategies of pun
translation in the American comic science fiction trilogy Back to the Future are discussed.
